Home Tanning Beds Are Good For Your Health: Truth Or Myth?

With all the bad press going out recently about the use of home tanning beds, you might be surprised at the number of benefits home tanning beds have.

First and foremost, they offer people the opportunity to get that healthy looking glow year round. Whether in the summer or the winter, many people find it hard to spend enough time in the sun. Therefore, going to a tanning salon or using home tanning beds is the only viable option.

While getting a nice tan is usually the first benefit most people think of – it certainly is not the only one. Over the last few years, scientific research by the vitamin D council has confirmed that exposure to UV rays is beneficial because it actually helps the body create Vitamin D. As you may know, Vitamin D deficiency is very common in some areas of the world. Particularly in regions with long cold winter climates.

Vitamin D is important for our body because it prevents unfortunate diseases, such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Vitamin D is also essential for the prevention of many forms of cancer including prostate, colon, and breast cancer.

Is it a surprise that most people feel better, look healthier, and have a thinner, fitter appearance when they have a tan? It shouldn’t be.

The key thing to remember is this: too much of anything is not good for you. And the same goes for home tanning beds and tanning salons. The sun, and home tanning beds, if used properly, can help improve your health by allowing your body to produce the right levels of Vitamin D. However, in excess (ie. in the case of sunburn), the sun and home tanning beds can be very hazardous to your health.

So it’s up to you to use your own common sense when out in the sun and using home tanning beds if you’re after that nice healthy glow. You should feel free to use them moderately. Just don’t buy into all the hype.
